The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic version of an erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, to be sold over the counter in the United States.
A drug-safety review of more than 4,000 patients with erectile dysfunction, who were not taking their usual dose of sildenafil, showed that the drug is unlikely to cause serious, life-threatening side effects.
The FDA said that Viagra has not been approved for sale in the United States because of safety concerns and a recent safety study that indicated that it could cause an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
